2nd Patch Impressions

Now that the second and final patch has been released for both the PS3 and XBOX 360 versions of NCAA Football 09, here’s my impressions:

  • The HB slip screen is more realistic.  Rather than having my defensive line try to sack the QB, a few of the DE’s actually stay back & defend the screen.  Also, if you want to be successful on screens, you have to actually break tackles and find the holes.
  • The breakaway system is tuned down.  Before the patch, if the running back made a cut to the outside, then there was no way for anyone to catch up with him regardless of his speed.  Fortunately, it looks like the patch has fixed this issue.  In a lot of cases, you still won’t catch up.  However, your players will gain on the breakaway runner.
  • The patch was supposed to fix the poor kick coverage problem.  However, the CPU scored a touchdown on the first kickoff after downloading the patch.  Coincidence?  I think so….the kick coverage does SEEM to be better.  However, I think that 40 yard returns on every kickoff is ridiculous.
  • When you are playing defense on your home field, your players will now try to hype the crowd up even more during critical situations.  When I played a game earlier tonight, I had 3 or 4 guys on defense trying to hype the crowd up on a 3rd and short situation.

Overall, the game seems more realistic.  However, I am not ready to give my full and official review.  I’ve been trying to hold off giving the game a grade until we received the “100%” version of the game.  However, here’s a preview of the title:  Madden 09 Beta.  For a complete list of all of the fixes associated with patch #2 or “1.2″, click here.
